전례 없는 학교 총기 사건 시대, 학생들이 마주한 현실
고등학교에 다니며 느끼는 일상은 늘 단조로웠다. 매년 똑같은 색깔의 벽과 가구들, 수백 명의 선배들이 사용했던 것들이 그대로 남아있는 학교는 마치 시간이 멈춘 듯했다. 그런데 2023년 학기 말, 평소와 다른 변화를 목격했다. 학교 곳곳에 경비원과 경찰, 보안요원들이 평소보다 훨씬 많이 배치되기 시작했고, 이들은 모두 무장하고 있었다.
흥미롭게도 이런 변화에 대해 언급하는 학생들을 찾기 어려웠다. 경비원 수가 증가하기 시작한 시점부터 현재까지 지속적으로 보안 인력이 배치되고 있음에도 불구하고, 친구들이나 동급생들 사이에서 이에 대한 논의를 들어본 적이 없다. 아마도 이런 변화가 이미 예상된 것이었기 때문일 것이다. 최근 학교 총기 사건이 심각할 정도로 빈발하고 있기 때문이다.
실제 통계가 이를 뒷받침한다. 미국 K-12 교육 전문 매체인 K-12 Dive에 따르면, 2021년부터 2024년까지 미국 초중고등학교에서 발생한 총기 사건은 매년 기록을 경신했다. 특히 2023년에는 349건의 사건이 발생했는데, 이는 2020년 대비 3배 증가한 수치다.
이런 전국적 통계가 남의 일이 아님을 보여주는 사건이 우리 학교에서도 일어났다. 소셜미디어 스냅챗을 통해 한 학생이 총기 사진과 함께 “내일 사랑하는 사람들을 꼭 안아줘라, 마지막일지도 모르니까”라는 글을 게시한 것이다. 다행히 실제 사건으로 이어지지는 않았고, 해당 학생은 당국의 조사를 받았다.
이 사건은 뉴스에서만 접하던 총기 사건이 우리 교실에서도 현실이 될 수 있음을 일깨웠다. 따라서 학교 내 보안 인력 증가에 대한 학생들의 무반응이 무관심에서 비롯된 것이 아니라, 이미 예견된 변화로 받아들이고 있기 때문일 수 있다. 총기 사건 위협이 증가하면서 무장 보안에 대한 수요도 늘어났고, 우리 학교 역시 이러한 요구에 적극 대응하고 있는 것으로 보인다.
새롭게 배치된 경비원들에 대한 심경은 복잡하다. 한편으로는 학교가 학생들의 안전을 진지하게 고려하며 보호 조치를 취하고 있다는 점에서 안도감을 느낀다. 하지만 동시에 우려도 든다. 경비원들의 행동이 문제가 아니라, 이들의 증가된 배치 자체가 미국 사회의 현주소를 보여주기 때문이다. 미국은 현재 학생과 아동을 대상으로 한 폭력 문제에 직면해 있으며, 이 문제는 지속적으로 악화되고 있다.
무장 보안이 당장 필요한 임시 대책일 수는 있지만, 이것이 영구적 해결책이 되어서는 안 된다. 학생들이 제2의 보금자리여야 할 학교에서 무장한 경비원을 봐야만 안전함을 느끼는 상황은 바람직하지 않다. 진정한 해답은 근본 원인 해결에 있다. 정신건강 지원 확대, 소통 체계 개선, 학생들이 소외되지 않고 의견을 표현할 수 있는 환경 조성이 필요하다.
차세대인 우리에게는 단순히 복도에 경비원을 더 배치하는 것을 넘어선 포괄적 해결책을 요구할 책임이 있다. 우리의 목소리는 중요하며, 이제 그 목소리를 통해 학교를 진정으로 안전한 공간, 두려움 없이 학습과 성장이 가능한 곳으로 만들어 나가야 할 때다.

Whenever I went to my high school, I always felt myself growing dull from the monotony. My high school seemingly defied time’s progression, as each year I saw the same colors, furniture, and objects as if they hadn’t been touched by hundreds of past students. But recently, near the end of the 2023 school year, I noticed something change in my usually consistent school experience. Guards, police, and security officers were appearing more than usual around my school, and all were armed.
I wouldn’t have known if others noticed these changes. From the onset of growing guard numbers to their consistent presence in my current school year, I hadn’t heard even one friend or classmate comment on the new security personnel. But maybe that’s because such change was expected, as school shootings had recently become worryingly more common.
K-12 schools experienced record numbers of shooting incidents in the past four years. K-12 Dive, a journalism company focused on K-12 school information, found that schools from 2021-2024 experienced record incidents, with nearly each year breaking the previous year’s record. In fact, 2023 reportedly had 349 incidents alone, triple the amount experienced in 2020.
One of those 349 incidents may have come from my school. On Snapchat, a photo circulated of a rifle that a student at my school had taken with the caption “hug your loved 1s tmr might be the last.” Fortunately, the threat never came to fruition, and the person who took the photo was reprimanded by officers.
But the incident showed us that shootings we’d been hearing about nationwide could potentially come to our own classrooms, which is why I wonder if the lack of response to increased guards wasn’t from ignorance but because it was already expected. With the growing threat of mass shootings came demand for more armed security, and clearly my school intended to answer such calls in full force.
I’m not sure what to make of the new guards, however. For one, I’m glad our school is taking our safety seriously and taking great measures to ensure our protection. On the other hand, I also feel concerned—not because of anything the guards had done, but because of what their increased numbers say about our country. We, the USA, are facing a problem that’s killing students and children, and it continues to grow at an alarming rate.
While armed security may serve as a necessary temporary measure, it cannot become our permanent solution. As students, we shouldn’t have to see armed guards to feel safe in what should be our second home. The real answer lies in addressing root causes—improving mental health resources, fostering better communication, and creating supportive environments where students feel heard rather than isolated.
As the next generation, we have the responsibility to demand comprehensive solutions that go beyond adding more guards to our hallways. Our voices matter, and it’s time we use them to push for changes that will make schools truly safe places where learning can flourish without fear.
