한국계 미국인이 경험한 문화적 혼란과 성장의 이야기
솔직히 말하면, 넷플릭스에서 ‘케이팝 데몬 헌터스(KPop Demon Hunters)’가 나온다는 소식을 들었을 때 정말 기대가 컸습니다. 미국에서 오랫동안 살면서 느낀 건데, TV 프로그램이나 영화에서 한국 문화가 나오는 경우는 정말 드물었기 때문입니다. 대부분 한국에서 만든 작품이거나 다른 나라에서 제작된 것들뿐이었습니다.
그래서 미국 스튜디오가 한국 신화와 문화에서 영감을 받아 미국 관객들을 위해 만든 애니메이션이라는 얘기를 듣고는 ‘드디어!’라는 생각이 들었습니다. 게다가 출시된 지 5주가 지나도 넷플릭스 톱 10에서 1위를 유지한다는 건 넷플릭스 역사상 새로운 기록이라고 합니다. 내 문화적 배경과 연결되는 작품을 큰 화면에서 볼 수 있다는 생각에 완전히 들떠 있었습니다.
하지만 막상 영화를 보고 나니 예상했던 경험과는 달랐습니다. 물론 한국인으로서 공감할 수 있는 부분들이 있었습니다. 케이팝 팬들의 열정적인 사랑이나 김밥 같은 한국 음식들이 나오는 장면들 말입니다. 그런데 대부분의 시간 동안은 영화 속 한국적 표현들과 거리감을 느꼈습니다.
아마도 이 작품이 다양한 한국 신화들을 다루고 있기 때문인 것 같습니다. 한국에서 자란 사람들이라면 영화를 보면서 알아볼 수 있는 설화들이겠지만, 뉴저지(New Jersey)에서 자란 나에게는 한국의 광범위한 민속과 문화사의 한 부분인 이런 신화들이 완전히 새로운 경험이었습니다.
한국 문화에 매우 독특한 이런 요소들이 마치 완전히 낯선 외국 콘텐츠처럼 느껴지면서, 한국인이면서 동시에 미국인인 나의 정체성에 대해 의문을 갖게 됐습니다. 그 순간 깨달았습니다. 내가 미국인만큼 한국인이 되고 싶다면, 미국 문화를 경험한 만큼 한국 문화도 더 많이 경험해야 한다는 것을 말입니다.
‘케이팝 데몬 헌터스’가 내가 기대했던 것과는 정확히 다른 경험을 줬지만, 그래도 이 작품을 정말 즐겁게 봤고 한국 문화에 관심을 불러일으킨 것에 대해 고맙게 생각합니다. 이 영화는 비평적으로나 상업적으로 모두 성공했습니다. 로튼 토마토(Rotten Tomatoes)에서 96% 평점을 받았고, 영화의 한 곡은 스포티파이(Spotify) 글로벌 주간 음악 차트에서 1위를 차지했습니다.
이런 성공은 ‘기생충’이나 ‘오징어 게임’ 같은 작품들과 함께 한국 문화를 소재로 한 미국 영화 제작을 더욱 가치 있는 사업으로 만들었습니다. 한국의 오래된 설화들이 세계 무대에 올라서게 된 것입니다. 세계 사람들이 한국의 음악뿐만 아니라 문화적 이야기들까지 즐기는 모습을 보니 정말 기쁩니다. 개인적으로도 이러한 한국 문화를 좀 더 한국인의 입장에서 즐길 수 있게 되기를 희망합니다.
What K-Pop Demon Hunters Means to Me as a Korean American High Schooler
I was excited to hear about the release of KPop Demon Hunters on Netflix. For all the time I had spent in the USA, the only references I had seen towards Korean culture in tv shows and movies were specifically from shows and movies that were made in countries other than the US. So when I heard that a new Netflix animated film was being produced for US audiences by an American studio inspired by Korean mythology and culture, a film that also reached #1 in Netflix’s top 10 (even after 5 weeks from its initial release, which is a new record in Netflix history!), I was absolutely ready to see a culture I identify with on the big screen.
However, watching the movie didn’t provide me the experience I thought I would have. Watching through the film, I recognized some things that I could relate to as a Korean: the feverish love for K-pop by K-pop fans and the representation of Kimbap and other Korean foods in the film. But for the most part, I felt mostly disconnected with the Korean representation in the film.
This is likely due to the fact that KPop Demon Hunters references many different Korean mythologies, tales that those raised in South Korea would probably recognize while watching the film. But for me, a Korean American raised in New Jersey, these mythologies that likely represent a portion of Korea’s expansive folklore and cultural history were a new experience for me.
The fact that something so distinct to Korean culture felt like an unidentifiable foreign piece of media made me question my identity as a person that was part Korean and American. I realised that, if I wanted to make myself as much of a Korean as I was an American, I needed to experience more of Korean culture as I had experienced so much of American culture.
Even though KPop Demon Hunters didn’t exactly give me what I had expected, I still very much enjoy it and am thankful for the attention it has brought onto Korean culture. The movie’s success both critically and commercially, getting a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and reaching #1 on one of its song in Spotify’s global weekly music, has took the old tales of Korea to the world stage and have made making Korean cultured US films a venture even more worth taking after films and shows like Parasite and Squid Games. I’m glad to see the world enjoy what Korea has to offer in not just its music but also in its cultural tales, and hope that I can also learn to enjoy it on a even more personal level.
