첫 번째 지진이 일어났을 때 나는 샤워를 하고 있었다. 평온한 금요일 오후였고, 막 집에 돌아와서 깨끗하게 씻고 쉬려던 참이었다. 그런데 샤워를 하던 중 갑자기 방이 흔들리기 시작했고, 발밑에서 이상한 감각을 느꼈다. 처음에는 부모님 중 한 분이 실수로 큰 물건을 떨어뜨린 것 같다고 생각했지만, 그 느낌이 너무 이상해서 집 안에서 나는 소리가 아닐 수도 있다는 생각이 들었다. 혹시 이것이 끝인가, 멋진 금요일 오후가 끔찍한 재앙으로 바뀌는 것인가 하는 생각이 들기 시작했다.
그 생각은 발밑의 감각이 갑자기 사라지면서 중단되었다. 그 일이 너무 빠르게 일어나고 사라져서 잠깐 동안은 내가 상상한 것이 아닌가 싶었다. 결국 구글이 내가 환각을 본 것이 아니라 생애 첫 지진을 경험한 것임을 깨닫게 해주었다.
부모님과 친구들도 그 흔들림을 느꼈고, 모두 큰 물건이 떨어진 것이라고 생각했다(재미있게도). 지진이었다고 말해주자 그들은 놀랐지만 각자 놀랍도록 무덤덤했다. 지진이 별다른 영향을 주지 않았기 때문에 대부분 무시되었다.
하지만 나는 이 상황에 대해 다르게 느꼈다. 우리 학교는 지진 대피 훈련을 실시하거나 논의한 적이 없었다. 자연재해는 뉴저지 같은 동부 연안 지역의 도시에서는 상상할 수 없는 일이었다. 그래서 이것이 1783년 이후 가장 강한 규모 4.8의 지진이었다는 것을 알았을 때, 만약 우리가 더 강하고 끔찍한 지진을 경험한다면 나와 주변 사람들이 어떻게 해야 할지 궁금했다.
하지만 뉴저지는 자연재해와 사건들의 최악의 상황에서 항상 벗어나 있는 듯한 주이다. 허리케인은 보통 우리를 피해 간다(샌디를 제외하고), 토네이도는 절대 너무 크게 자라지 않으며, 지진은 그저 땅의 자갈들을 살짝 흔들 뿐이다. 최근의 사건도 이를 확신시켜 주었다. 우리가 경험한 가장 강한 지진은 한 세기 전의 규모 5.3 지진이었다.
그래서 우리 주가 이런 지진들에 어떻게 반응할지 궁금하다. 이를 무시할 것인가, 아니면 더 나쁜 일의 전조로 여길 것인가? 바라건대, 권력을 가진 사람들이 이것이 정말로 그냥 또 다른 우연한 사건인지 아니면 걱정해야 할 일인지 알 것이다.
New Jersey Earthquakes, is this the Sign of Something New?
I was taking a shower when the first earthquake hit. It had been a calm Friday afternoon, I had just come back home ready to spend my afternoon clean and rested. However, as I was showering, the room suddenly began to rumble and I felt a strange sensation beneath my feet. At first I thought one of my parents had accidentally dropped some sort of large object, but the feeling was so strange that it occurred to me it was likely not coming from inside the house. I began to wonder if this was the end, was my awesome Friday afternoon about to turn into a terrible disaster?
The thought was cut short by the sudden disappearance of the sensation under my feet. The incident had occurred and disappeared so quickly that, for a moment, I thought I had imagined the experience. Google ultimately helped me realize that I wasn’t hallucinating, I had just experienced my first earthquake.
My parents and my friends had also felt the rumbling, they all collectively assumed it was some large object falling (funnily enough). Telling them about the earthquake made them surprised but each of them were surprisingly unaffected, the earthquake hadn’t really made any effect and so was mostly ignored by everybody.
But I felt different about the situation. My school never conducted or discussed earthquake drills, natural disasters were something unthinkable for a town in an east coast state like New Jersey. So when I discovered this was a 4.8 Earthquake, the strongest felt since 1783, I wondered what I and those around would do if we ever experienced something stronger and more terrible.
However New Jersey is a state that is seemingly always untouched by the worst of Natural disasters and events. Hurricanes usually avoid us (except for Sandy), tornados never grow too large, and earthquakes just seem to shift the pebbles on the ground. The recent event also convinced me of this, the strongest Earthquake we’ve ever experienced was a 5.3 earthquake over a century ago.
So I’m curious how our state will react to these earthquakes. Will it choose to ignore it or consider it as a potential precursor to something worse? Hopefully, those in power will know if this is truly just another random incident or something to worry about.
