가자 전쟁(Gaza War)이 2주년을 맞이하고 있다. 2023년 10월 7일, 하마스(Hamas)가 천 명이 넘는 이스라엘인의 사망을 초래한 끔찍한 기습 공격을 감행한 이후, 이 분쟁은 국제 정치 및 인도주의적 위기로 확대되어 세계 주요 국가들과 동맹체들의 주목을 받고 있다. 또한 이 분쟁은 평범한 사람들이 고민해야 할 심각한 질문들의 원천이 되었다. 팔레스타인은 국가인가? 이스라엘은 군사력을 어디까지 사용할 수 있는가? 이전부터 존재했던 이러한 질문들은 이제 이 문제로 인해 더욱 부각되었고, 그 어느 때보다 답을 요구하고 있다.
답이 필요하다는 새로운 절박함은 양측 지지자들이 분쟁 해결책을 향한 열정을 더욱 강화시켰다. 그 어느 때보다도 친팔레스타인(pro-Palestine)과 친이스라엘(pro-Israel) 시위가 전 세계적으로 격화되었고, 감정이 고조되면서 두 집단 간의 폭력마저 흔한 광경이 되었다.
하지만 가자 전쟁 분쟁이 일반 사람들의 삶에 영향력을 미치고 존재감을 드러내는 또 다른 무대가 있다. 가장 혼합된 인종 공동체를 가진 곳 중 하나인 고등학교가 분쟁 양측 학생들 사이의 논의와 의사 표현의 중요한 장이 되었다.
정치는 미국 전역의 고등학교에서 눈에 띄지만 지배적이지는 않은 존재감을 가져왔다. 어른들에게 고등학교는 진보적 또는 보수적 의제를 추진하기 위한 논쟁의 장이었고, 특정 학교의 교육과정을 둘러싼 시위가 발생하기도 했다. 하지만 학생들에게는 학교와 그 안의 공동체가 대부분 사람들이 믿는 것만큼 그들의 정치적 성향에 큰 영향을 미치지 않는다. 브루킹스(Brookings)의 2025년 연구에서 인터뷰한 학생들의 67%가 자신의 학교가 이념적 성향에서 “중립적/균형적”이라고 답했으며, 나머지 33%는 진보적 편향과 보수적 편향을 주장하는 학생들로 균등하게 나뉘었다.
그러나 가자 전쟁은 다르다. 분쟁 양측의 견해는 미국에서 논의되는 다른 정치적 갈등에서 일반적으로 가지는 견해보다 훨씬 더 극단적이다. 팔레스타인 지지자들에게 이 분쟁은 테러와의 전쟁이라기보다는 인종 청소(ethnic cleansing)에 가깝다. 이스라엘 지지자들에게 이 분쟁은 10월 7일 하마스가 저지른 학살에 대한 정당한 대응이다. 양측 의견이 모두 얼마나 심각한지를 감안할 때, 양측 학생 지지자들은 해결책을 만들어내기 위한 행동에 나섰다.
나는 우리 학교에서 이를 직접 목격했다. 학생들이 이스라엘과 팔레스타인 학생들 간의 토론을 위한 동아리를 만들었고, 분쟁 지역의 팔레스타인 난민을 지원하기 위해 자체적으로 모금 활동을 만들기도 했다.
가자 전쟁은 미국이 고려해야 할 그 어느 때보다 중요한 분쟁이 되고 있으며, 미국 고등학교 학생들은 이전 그 어느 때보다 더 많이 참여하고 있다.
The Gaza War is coming to its 2nd anniversary. Since October 7th 2023—when Hamas launched its terrible surprise attack that resulted in over a thousand Israeli deaths—the conflict has spiraled into an international political and humanitarian crisis warranting the attention of world’s top nations and alliances. The conflict has also become a source for serious questions to be considered by the everyday person. Is Palestine a nation? How far is Israel allowed to go with its forces? These questions that had existed before have now become exemplified with the problem, requiring an answer now more than ever.
It’s with this new necessity of an answer that has led to an increased passion from both sides towards their solutions for the conflict. Now, more than ever, pro-palestine and pro-israel protests have intensified over the world with even violence becoming an common sight between these two groups as emotions run high.
But there is another stage where the Gaza War conflict has become as influential and present in the lives of its everyday people. High Schools, areas with some of the most mixed ethnic communities, have become serious grounds of discussion and representation between students of both sides of the conflict.
Politics have had a noticeable but not dominating presence in High Schools around America. For adults, High Schools have been areas of contention for pushing liberal or conservative agendas; protests occurring over the curriculums of certain schools. For students, however, their schools and the communities in them usually don’t have as large of an influence on their political allegiance as most would believe. In a 2025 study by Brookings, 67% of students interviewed said their schools were “neutral/balanced” in their ideological orientation, with the remaining 33% being evenly split between students claiming liberal or conservative bias.
But the Gaza War is different. The views of either side of the conflict are far more drastic than those usually held during other political conflicts discussed in the United States. For supporters of Palestine, the conflict is more of a ethnic cleansing than a war on terrorism. For supporters of Israel, the conflict is a justified response to a massacre committed by Hamas on October 7th. With how serious both opinions are, student supporters of both sides have taken action in pushing for a solution to be formed.
I’ve seen this first hand in my school, where students have created clubs for discussions between Israeli and Palestinian students, where students have also created their own fundraisers to support Palestinian refugees in the conflict zone.
The Gaza War is a conflict becoming more important than ever for the US to consider, and America’s High School students are becoming more involved than ever before.
