Meta announced their $799 Ray-Ban Display smart glasses. They look like regular Ray-Bans but have a small display in the right lens showing messages and directions. A Neural Band wristband reads muscle signals – you control everything by pinching and swiping in the air.
The glasses feature six-hour battery life, real-time translation, and an outdoor-visible display.
People I know are divided. Some see revolutionary study tools – physics formulas floating during homework. Of course, others see cheating opportunities. Teachers are probably already planning bans.
Privacy concerns me most. I remember a YouTube video where college students used similar glasses to identify strangers and instantly find their addresses. Meta stores recordings for a year. The tiny recording LED? Nobody will notice it.
We already struggle with phone addiction. Now screens in our vision all day? At $799, most students can’t afford them. But prices will drop, and eventually they’ll become mandatory like Chromebooks at school. Then avoiding smart glasses addiction will seem impossible.
Schools will ban them, but Apple and Google are developing their own versions. There are helpful features – live captions, visual learning aids. In five years, basic communication might be impossible without smart glasses.
Most likely, these smart glasses will change everything about daily life. Not because we want them, but because technology becomes essential whether we choose it or not.
